It is believed that atherosclerosis is partly caused by high cholesterol. Atherosclerosis is commonly known as hardening of the arteries, which a danger sign for increasing risk of catastrophic diseases like stroke or heart attack. So, keeping your cholesterol levels under control is of paramount importance. There are several effective ways to lower cholesterol naturally including easy diet changes, stress reduction and natural cholesterol lowering supplements.

A low fat diet has been promoted heavily the last few decades as the most effective diet to lower heart disease risk. Current research does not necessarily support this idea. There are many doctors using a variety of different diets successfully to lower cholesterol and risk of heart disease.

While the low fat diet is not supported by research to be the only diet that can protect against heart disease, Dr. Dean Ornish is well known for his approach, which involves combining a low fat, vegetarian diet with stress reduction and increasing physical exercise. Don't worry if you're not thrilled with the idea of becoming a vegetarian. Other doctors advocate a much different dietary strategy. For example, Dr. Barry Sears developed a healthy non-vegetarian diet called the Zone Diet that is often considered to be one of many variations of the so-called "low carb diet."

A balanced ratio of carbohydrates, fat and protein is emphasized by Dr. Sears in the Zone Diet. Sr. Sears' diet has been described as "eating the way our grandparents ate." Many people report success in losing weight with a low carb approach, without having to count calories or going hungry. Along with healthy weight loss, many different health conditions have seen improvement, including reducing high cholesterol.

Cholesterol lowering vitamins are another tactic that works well with diet changes. Concerning dietary supplements, it pays to go with quality rather than basing your decision on cost alone. There's a lot of variation in the quality of supplements on the market, and it's common to see exaggerated claims without providing research to back them up.

Nutrients proven to be most effective at reducing cholesterol include, guggulipid, policosanol, green tea extract, tumeric and beta sitosterol. Many clinical research trials have shown these nutrients to be among the most effective available at this time. Guggulipid and policosanol are the most important nutrients to look for in a supplement.

There are many products currently on the market claiming to use policosanol, but many in fact are using an incomplete form of policosanol called octacosanol. Octacosanol will NOT give the positive results outlined in the clinical trials. The cholesterol lowering results apply ONLY to the genuine policosanol extracted from sugar cane wax which is produced in Cuba.

As you can see, doing some simple research before you choose a cholesterol health supplement can make a difference. Check to confirm that the manufacturer uses genuine policosanol. Also, check to see if the product has been properly tested for biological contamination and that it is produced in a GMP (good manufacturing practice) facility as well as meeting the U.S. and/or the British Pharmacopoeia standards.

These proven natural ways to reduce cholesterol can help you avoid the side effects and possible dangers of prescription medications. Of course, you may want to consult your health care provider before changing any medications you may be taking and before beginning any new supplementation program.

One study evaluated the effect of dietary intervention of over two thousand men recovering from heart attacks. At the end of two years, the group that was given fish oil was found to increase there fish oil intake four times as much as the other subjects in the study. The group that took fish oils experienced a significantly lower mortality. The group that took the fish oils had a 29% reduction of risk of death compared with the other groups.

Even in patients with no apparent clinical evidence of arterial disease, eating fish has been show to improve the arteries.

Omega 3 or essential fatty acid deficiency also contributes to some severe degenerative inflammatory conditions such as Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. I am sure you have seen people whose hands or feet are all malformed from arthritis and they are in severe pain. This person finds it hard to even move around. This can be prevented if the proper essential fatty acids, mainly Omega 3 fish oils, would have been taken. Clinical studies in women have shown a decreased risk of rheumatoid arthritis in those who have consumed fish oils. A double blind, placebo controlled study of rheumatoid arthritis patients given 1.8 grams per day of fish revealed less morning stiffness and tender joints. There are many studies that show the benefit of fish oils with rheumatoid arthritis. The main result being less tenderness and swelling of joints.

Fish oil is also important for proper kidney function. If the kidneys begin to malfunction, often times the person will have to go on dialysis. If any of you know somebody who has been on dialysis, it is not a pretty site. Fish oils have been known to lower serum triglyceride levels in people with kidney disease and they have shown to be clinically beneficial. So taking the proper fish oil benefits proper kidney function, which may prevent many other diseases.

We all know somebody who has heart disease or high cholesterol. Clogged arteries are a slowly degenerative disease that can be prevented with the proper amount of fish oils. Due to the foods that we consume, it is like chocking off the blood supply to the rest of the body or getting the pipes rusted. Fish oils help to maintain normal functioning arteries that can promote healthy blood flow to all parts of the body

Fish oils also promote healthy colon function. Several studies with inflammatory bowel disease reveal an improvement after taking fish oils. High levels of inflammation have been shown in patient's intestines and in the stools of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. The formation of these inflammatory compounds can be deceased by reducing or eliminating meat, red meat, and dairy, while taking in more of the proper amount of omega 3 fish oils in there diet. Inflammation in the intestines is very painful, it even sounds painful.

One of the most important secrets that most physicians do not even know is that fish oils help prevent blood cells from clumping together. Blood clots cause heart attacks and stokes. Taking omega 3 fish oils now helps to prevent heart attack and strokes. If you are or a loved one has had a heart attack or stroke, you know how devastating it can be. These conditions can be prevented. Having a heart attack is a very painful occurrence not only for you but also for your loved ones. By promoting a healthy circulatory system, these diseases can be prevented.

There is a large body of evidence that now documents the beneficial effects of fish oil consumption. The Omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are the components of fish oil responsible for its preventative and therapeutic effects. These include helping to lower blood pressure, improving cholesterol and triglyceride levels, preventing strokes, decreasing the risk of heart attacks and arteriosclerosis.

The main benefit of Omega 3's are to decrease production of prostaglandin E2 that is the cause of inflammation.

As you can see from the above, most of these conditions are of an inflammatory nature, so eating the proper diet and taking Omega 3 fish oils are crucial for maintaining good health and preventing disease in the future.

With all the hype in the media, it is confusing as to which is the best fatty acids. Perform your own research and find all the wonderful advantages of omega 3 fatty acids at www.bestfishoil.Performcofthefuture.com now!

Learn More About Low Carb Meal Plans

by Jacob

It has been long established that the consumption of excessive carbohydrates and a low fiber diet leads to unwanted weight gain. When processed by the bodies digestive enzymes, carbohydrates become glucose, which are essentially the bodies fuel. Excessive and unused glucose eventually become fat, which is the bodies way of storing energy.

Low carb diet plans have long been a favorite among all diet plans as it is not only effective, but also safe for the body (if carried out in moderation). Here is a quick look at some of the more famous low-carb meal plans.

The Atkins Diet

The meal plans in the Atkins Diet incorporates a system that is separated into four phases. It involves a restriction of certain types of foods and requires accurate measurements when it comes to portions of foods consumed. Some of the foods that are off-limits in the Atkins Diet include unprocessed carbohydrates such as white pastry, pasta and certain fruits and vegetables. The meal plans in this diet also includes the consumption of healthy food supplements.

Phase 1:

The first phase incorporates meal plans that run a course of 2 weeks. During this period, the daily consumption of carbohydrates is reduced to a maximum of 20 grams. This limited intake of carbohydrates will cause the body to enter into a state called ketosis where excessive body fat will be burned and expelled.

Phase 2:

The second phase involves the maintenance in the rate of weight lost through a series of specially formulated meal plans.

Phase 3:

The third phase is known as the pre-maintenance stage. This stage commences once you are 5-10 pounds away from your ideal weight.

Phase 4:

After achieving the target weight, this final stage introduces a healthy meal plan that helps you maintain the weight.

The South Beach Diet

This diet plan is very different from the Atkins Diet plan. It recommends eating 6 small meals a day and does not involve the measurement of portions and counting calories. The South Beach diet is divided into three stages to involve a general guideline what you should or should not eat. In the first stage, you are to restrict your diet to a specific group of carbohydrates. In the second stage certain nuts, whole grains and fruits are introduced to the diet. The final stage involves a meal plan that would help maintain a healthy weight.

Among the two diet plans, most experts prefer the South Beach diet, as the meal plans there are more wholesome and balanced, thus healthier for the body. The introduction of several small meals throughout the day is also less stressful on the body, reducing the urge to binge and preventing hunger pangs.

by Adrian Fletcher

There are many people out there who need to reduce their cholesterol levels. A blood test that is administered by a doctor, will determine whether your cholesterol is too high and if it is what can be done to correct this. Since cholesterol and diet go hand in hand, your doctor may recommend that you follow a low fat diet that is high in nutrients.

In most cases, cholesterol levels can be reduced and controlled by diet and exercise alone so that there is no need to resort to any form of medicine. When first diagnosed with high cholesterol this is the first strategy employed. The doctor will advise you to control your diet and give you some general good eating guidelines. They may also suggest a suitable exercise program. You can manage your cholesterol and diet on your own or for a more tailored plan, you can consult a nutritionist.

Nutritionists are able to show you which foods correlate with an increase in cholesterol levels. You will learn what foods to avoid and which ones are helpful for sticking to healthy levels of cholesterol and diet guidelines. You should learn everything you can about maintaining a healthy diet so that you can keep your heart healthy.

You will want to learn which of your preferred foods are truly nutritious. Dieting is often unsuccessful because dieters are unable to face eating the same foods over and over. You want to work at coming up with new cholesterol and diet-friendly recipes that will make it easier to stay with the things you should have. Adding a variety of herbs and spices to flavor otherwise bland foods can help you in this effort.

When you're ready to tackle your cholesterol and diet and are armed with solid goals, it's a good idea to find appropriate cholesterol friendly recipes. Try teasing your taste buds with something different. You may find that you enjoy the new taste. Variety in your diet can keep you on the right track for lowering your cholesterol.

There is no doubt that the link between your cholesterol and diet will influence your cholesterol reading, however you must also take on a certain amount of exercise to increase your chances of reducing cholesterol and improving your general health. Exercising can be fun and stimulating and you should search for physical activities that will fit into your schedule and fitness level.

When attempting to regulate your cholesterol and diet, select the foods that you actually like and types of exercise that you actually enjoy doing. You will be more likely to keep true to your lifestyle changes, rather than falling back into old behavior patterns and risking high cholesterol levels.

If you have managed to lower your cholesterol from a previously high range then you appreciate the value of keeping it within what is considered the cholesterol normal range for a person. The older you get, the more important it is to maintain good eating habits by avoiding foods that significantly raise your cholesterol level.

Stick with the eating plan that has helped you to successfully lower your cholesterol. It's okay to treat yourself to a snack every so often just don't indulge everyday. Just be sure to watch portions and maintain self control. You should be proud of the hard work and dedication it took for you to come so far and use those feelings of accomplishment to resist the urge to slip comfortably back into your old, unhealthy lifestyle.

Exercise is an important part of maintaining the cholesterol normal range in your overall health. If you begin skipping sessions in your new routine, you could easily backslide into your old, sedentary ways. Remember the difficulty of your struggle to gain better habits and you'll be less likely to let them go. The same approach to exercise as your diet should be followed. Do the exercises you enjoy and take it slow to build momentum rather than setting unrealistic goals. Check with your doctor too if you are starting up an exercise program.

It's important to maintain a routine of good health habits. Even though you have successfully gotten into a cholesterol normal range for the time being, there is still the possibility it can rise again. Remember how good it feels to have your health and vitality back whenever you're tempted to cheat.

For people who have problems keeping cholesterol normal range levels, a physician may be able to give them a prescription medicine. Some people have a hard time reducing their cholesterol levels more than other people. Some people naturally make an excessive amount of cholesterol and medicine is the only solution for them to decrease their cholesterol. People who have had problems with their heart and have to lower their cholesterol right away are given medicine also because they can't take the time to use the natural method of dieting and exercising.

Poor diet could hinder the effectiveness of any medication you take, so make sure that you maintain a good diet along with intake of medication to lower cholesterol. By maintaining a cholesterol normal range, it is also good for the heart, and keeps you fitter and younger for a longer time. In fact, most doctors that prescribe medication will insist that you combine a healthy lifestyle with the medication rather than rely totally on medication.

In order to have a healthy cholesterol normal range, you must exercise and eat only healthy cholesterol friendly foods that you enjoy. When you balance the correct foods with exercise you will find that you not only look better, but feel better as well.

Is Smoking and High Cholesterol Related?

There are a lot of people who have to get the level of cholesterol down in their blood. A medical professional can test your blood and this will let you know if you have an elevated level of cholesterol and what you can do about this. There are now home cholesterol tests you can get without going to the doctor’s office. Usually cholesterol and smoking are closely related and your physician will most likely suggest that you do what is necessary and stop smoking.

Quit Smoking and Diet

If you can keep your cholesterol under control by modifying your diet, you will need to stop smoking. When your doctor first tells you that your cholesterol is high, this will be the first approach that will be suggested. Your doctor can provide you with some information regarding the type of diet and some suggestions on how to quit smoking to get you cholesterol under control. If you don't feel like you can make the suggested dietary changes and stop smoking on your own. There are many resources available like, a nutritionist and many methods the quit smoking.

The Nutritionist Can Light the Way

A nutritionist will enlighten you with the relationship between cholesterol and diet. You can learn what foods you should not eat and the ones that are very helpful to have in your diet. Just get informed about foods that are good for your heart is the best thing you can do to achieve better health.

What is the Relationship With Cholesterol and Smoking?

Cigarette smoking raises the overall cholesterol level in the blood stream. What happens in the blood is it decreases the High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) form of cholesterol which is more protective while elevating the Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and Very Low Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) forms which are the dangerous forms. When people quit smoking they see a drop in overall cholesterol level very quickly which is good. But what is even better is a more significant shift in the HDL ratios. The way to keep these benefits over time is more oxygen and cleaner the lungs also decrease the workload on the heart.

Smoking affects Blood Cholesterol Levels

Smoking slightly increases total cholesterol and triglycerides, and significantly decreases the "good" or HDL cholesterol. When you add this together with the toxic effects of cigarette smoke it leads to damage of the blood vessels in the heart and legs. Smoking doubles an individual's risk of heart attack and level of blood cholesterol.

Smoking, introduces 4000 chemical additives, and affects every part of our bodies. These chemicals do not provide any help to our body processes. These chemical were added to cigarettes to improve the flavor and smell, and keep you coming back for more.

Second Thoughts With Cholesterol in Shrimp

If you have high cholesterol and if the cholesterol in shrimp makes you have second thoughts, consider that lowering your cholesterol level does not mean that you have to give up eating Shrimp altogether. Even though you may feel as if you are giving up more than you are receiving, a little research will help you find that this is not really true. There are many delicious foods that can help you lower cholesterol to healthy levels.

Does Shrimp Increase Your Levels?

It is true that there is cholesterol in shrimp that will increase your levels, what you may not know is that it's not all bad. While eating shrimp does increase your LDL cholesterol somewhat, it also increases your good HDL cholesterol a whole lot more. So don't leave shrimp and shellfish out of your diet completely, just use you’re a little common sense and enjoy a smaller amount.

Include Healthy and Nutritious Foods

Include foods that are not only healthy and nutritious, but foods that you actually like and will enjoy eating. Do a little research and look into the types of food that fit with your dietary requirements and learn to prepare them properly. The effect of cholesterol in shrimp or other foods might be offset by preparing it with light fat-free sauces or a sprinkling of spices as opposed to covering them with heavy cream sauces.

Don’t Choose Foods You Hate

Selecting foods you hate in a diet you are following is a sure recipe for disaster. This is a huge mistake: You can choose heart healthy, cholesterol lowering foods that you will enjoy eating. You can put together a diet full of healthy foods, but if there is something you dislike then don't eat them, they will not do you any good! People will begin with the best intentions in the world and will commit to eating only the most nutritious food you can ever find. But what happens is, these nutrition-dense but boring foods fail to please your palate, and that is why a good cookbook that provides satisfying nutritious foods with pleasing flavors might be in order.

Get Help From a Nutritionist

Getting some help from a nutritionist who can give you the various types of food that can be eaten is invaluable. Picking foods you like will drive you to keeping good health. The idea is to base your diet on receiving the most nutritional value for the food you consume.

Planning to Avoid Bad Food Choices

People just have, poor diet planning that leads to having to eat the wrong foods or avoiding favorites like seafood because of the cholesterol in shrimp and other foods. If you are pro-active and spend enough time and attention to plan and develop the items in your diet menu then you can avoid making bad food choices.

Quantity and Varity

It is important that you have enough quantity of food in your diet to keep your hunger in control and also help with your weight and cholesterol.
